Abner Montfleury is a start-up vintner who has created a new type of semi-sweet white wine with a unique flavor profile. Made from a combination of peaches and grapes, this novel white wine has a rich and fruity taste that falls between dry and sweet. In a tribute to his late grandmother, Montfleury has named the wine Yvonne. He plans to launch a series of wines to be named for important women in his life. Next up is a red wine named for his mother, Carlene. The vintner also plans to launch a sparkling wine and a dessert wine in the months to come. Montfleury started exploring the wine industry from his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, by cold-calling other wine makers and networking through various wine associations. He learned all that he could about the industry from such research and then started his own label, called Montfleur Duvin, in 2020. Montfleur Duvin sources fruit locally and allows his wine to ferment for six weeks. The type of wine he makes does not require extensive aging and can be sold as soon as a batch completes fermentation. Now that he has obtained a federal license to distribute wine, Montfleur Duvin can ship anywhere in the United States. Abner Montfleury is a first-generation Haitian American who graduated from Boston College with a degree in psychology. He is a natural salesman and enjoys pitching Yvonne to restaurants and wine bars. No matter what the outcome, he gets to learn about that business owner’s motivations and concerns, and he considers every sales encounter a positive learning experience. Because he launched his business in 2020, he has met with many restaurant owners who have been forced to close or change operations due to the pandemic. Yet he remains undeterred and has decided that he will thrive in the long run by staying determined. He is motivated by the passion he feels for making wine and the enjoyment of sharing a product that he loves with others. Right now he is planning to elevate his profile by participating in a series of online virtual wine tastings, reaching out to wine groups on FaceBook to spread the word about the novel qualities and unique flavor profile of the wine that he has created.
